Katherine is beautiful, smart, and independent. I loved to follow them in this intriguing journey. The storyline is filled with mystery, danger, and twists and turns. There is a lot going on in this story. I enjoyed it.

“We thought we were close, no secrets between us. We understand you’re under a great deal of strain with your uncle’s death. But this?”

Katherine took a breath, then began to get angry. “I clearly have no idea what the three of you are talking about. I do not keep secrets from you, just as you do not keep them from me.”

Effie got to her feet so quickly Katherine stepped back. Her friend handed her the London Gazette, a circle drawn around an article.

She took the newspaper and read the noted item.

“The very eligible and handsome Lord Wallace, 4th Duke of Blackhall, is finally off the market. He’s made his vow. Does Lady Ivy-Rose T. even know she snagged the wealthiest and handsomest man in London? And does Lady RH realize she’s missed her opportunity? This should be something to watch unfold. All the best to the happy (?) couple. No matter who becomes the next Duchess of Blackhall.”

Katherine slowly sank down into the chair. Her friends looked at each other than at her.

“You’re the only Lady Ivy-Rose T. we know. And Lord Wallace is mentioned.”

“Hush,” Hattie snapped and elbowed Effie. “Eat a biscuit.”

Katherine re-read the article a second, then a third time. Who is Lady RH? Did someone else have his heart? Her breath came in spurts.

“Are you all right? You haven’t said a word.” Anna knelt next to her.

Katherine clenched her hands, her fingernails digging into her palms. She turned and stared at her close friend.

Anna studied Katherine’s face.

“You had no idea, did you?” Anna’s voice faded to a hushed silence. Her expression changed from hurt to horror.

July 1755

War is brewing between England and France. Impressed into the Royal Navy, Lieutenant Merrick, against all odds, advanced through the ranks to become an officer–but he is not a gentleman. A man with a tainted past from a traitorous family, cast down by King George–a stain no man can remove.

The characters are well developed, and very interesting. Lieutenant Merrick and India are fantastic characters. The supporting characters are great! The storyline is grippingly captivating, complex, and unique. She made her way deeper into the forest where the pine canopy captured the snow and shielded the forest floor. Here the snow wasn’t as deep. As she followed the forest path, a pattern of prints in the snow caught her attention, not an animal’s, but a human’s, prints. Her gaze followed the track. It led toward the lodge.

She hurried on and stopped to bend down for a closer look. Her stomach squeezed. Blood stains spattered the prints. She looked up toward the lodge.

Henry? The wild boar? She stood and checked the sky in the direction of the lodge. No smoke. Was the boy too badly hurt to start a fire?

She took off at a run. Her only thought was Henry.

Her muffled footfalls pounded and crunched on the forest ground as she ran. Afraid of what she’d find when she reached the lodge, she hurried. She pushed dangling branches out of her way as she broke past them, sending a cascade of snow in her wake.

There was only one set of footprints, but the blood stains were getting bigger as she raced along.

Had the boy made it to the lodge? Would she find him buried in the snow?

The gusts of wind picked up as she came to the clearing. The snow was coming down heavily now, making it nearly impossible to see more than a few feet in front of her. She could deal with that, but it covered the prints and blood. If Henry moved off the path, she might not find him in time.

Exhausted, her legs and back aching, she stopped and clung onto a tree as she caught her breath. She didn’t usually go to the lodge from this direction but was close.

Moving on, she kept watch through the snow drenched branches and finally made out the faint outline of the lodge ahead. Relieved, she hurried to the building. She wiped the ice from her eyelashes and climbed the steps onto the porch.

Blood stained the lodge door. Without stopping, she hurried inside, ready to help the boy, but she stopped with legs-shaking, heart-straining, chest-tightening, fear.

An unconscious person lay face-down on her sofa.

It wasn’t Henry.

My Review

This was my first Ruth A. Casie's book, and definitely won’t be my last.  I love the cover. This is the first book in The Ladies of Sommer by the Sea.  This riveting historical Romance is a GEM.  Lady Alicia and Captain Justin’s story is very well written, and entertaining.   Alicia is such a lovely character, headstrong and outspoken.  Justin, a retired Captain,  is a very handsome gentleman, determined, and devoted. They are so perfect together.  The storyline is filled with secrets, mystery, adventure, and danger.  I loved the main characters, their slow burn romance, the original and entertaining storyline, and the impressive cast of side characters. The scenery is beautifully described, and easy to visualize.  This series could be amazing in audiobook.  Looking forward to reading The Lady and the Spy, the next book in the series.

Alicia reached into her reticule and removed a folded letter and handed it to Mrs. Bainbridge.

“Mr. Caulfield and I had agreed my next book would be published in February, but we hadn’t finalized the contract. When I got to his office, I saw the review. I was disappointed of course, but when he suggested not publishing my story until the summer, I became upset.”

Mrs. Bainbridge lifted the quizzing glass that was tied to a ribbon that dangled down the front of her bodice and read the letter while Alicia opened her portmanteau and took out a package.

“This is wonderful news.” She handed the message back to Alicia.

“William Lane is the biggest publisher in London if not England. I had offered my books to him before I went to Mr. Caulfield, he said perhaps a smaller shop would be more appropriate for my work and suggested Caulfield Publishing. Isaac Caulfield is a good man, but he maintains tight control over all aspects of my work. I’ve told him several times I want to be involved. He pats me on the head, tells me not to worry about anything, and sends me on my way. My stories sell well. I planned to ask that we change the contract. I will pay the production costs. He can do the distribution and I would give him a commission based on sales. William Lane will never consider me now, not after reading the review.”

Alicia stared unblinking at her friend. She was at a loss for words as Mrs. Bainbridge helped her on with her pelisse.

“What makes you imagine Mr. Lane will be different? Be careful what you wish for. A larger company may have more constraints. Now, off with you. And I enjoyed your story. The review was one person’s opinion.”

“You’re right,” Alicia said as she jostled her portmanteau and the package of books.

“Would it be easier to leave the books in your luggage? The streets ice up in this weather.”

“I’m going a short distance and prefer not opening my luggage in the library. I’ll manage.”

A quick embrace from Mrs. Bainbridge and she was ready to face the weather.

She left the seminary and hadn’t gone far before she cursed herself for going at all. The street had turned to mud and ice, and the wind hadn’t stopped. Carrying the portmanteau and package of books proved to be a more difficult feat than she first imagined.

She crossed the lane and hurried down North Wickham to the library ahead. A dray stood in front of the building on the one area that wasn’t muddy. She maneuvered her way around the cart to avoid the large puddles in front and behind it.

As she reached the door her feet began to slip on a patch of ice. She juggled the package trying to keep it from falling into the mud. She saved the books but with the next step her foot slid out from under her. Her hands full she had no way to stop her fall.

A strong hand grabbed her elbow.

“I’ve got you,” he murmured in her ear.

She caught her balance and looked up into gray eyes that were strikingly familiar, but she had no idea why.

Audio Blitz: A Scene in Time By Jessica A. Clements

Today I am excited to join The Audio Flow in sharing A Scene In Time by Jessica A. Clements. Narrated by Marnye Young, Allyson Voller, and Taylor Meskimen, this is the first audiobook in The Wellesley/O’Brien Saga.

A Scene in Time by Jessica A. Clements

Adam, a Southern gentleman, knew the call to arms was near when President Lincoln asked for 100,000 men to stop secession and rebellion in the South. He joined the Union Cavalry – but not before he married his best, and only, friend.

Abby, an Irish immigrant that settled with her family in Virginia, was as Southern as you could get. When her husband announces that he had joined the Union cavalry, she couldn’t believe what she heard. She supported the decision of the one person that she loved more than the world itself.

As the war raged on, things weren’t always as they seemed. Abby’s sisters joined in the Southern cause, working to keep the way of life that the South had always had. Through grief, pain, and battles Abby keeps to the one place that she felt closest to her husband – the cottage that their families had given them.

A scene in time. An epic battle. And a tale of how love (through all of its forms) can transcend life and death.

Author Bio

Born British and raised in South Africa, Sarah Hegger suffers from an incurable case of wanderlust. Her match? A hot Canadian engineer, whose marriage proposal she accepted six short weeks after they first met. Together they’ve made homes in seven different cities across three different continents (and back again once or twice). If only it made her multilingual, but the best she can manage is idiosyncratic English, fluent Afrikaans, conversant Russian, pigeon Portuguese, even worse Zulu and enough French to get herself into trouble.

Mimicking her globe trotting adventures, Sarah’s career path began as a gainfully employed actress, drifted into public relations, settled a moment in advertising, and eventually took root in the fertile soil of her first love, writing. She also moonlights as a wife and mother. She currently lives in Ottawa, Canada, filling her empty nest with fur babies. Part footloose buccaneer, part quixotic observer of life, Sarah’s restless heart is most content when reading or writing books.

The supporting characters are great and intriguing.  Looking forward to read the next book in the Series!

My Review:
Wow!! Amy Cecil has an amazing, and an original writing. She never disappoints, and she always exceeds my expectations. This is the best Pride and Prejudice retelling I ever read / listen. In fact, this is the first time I can say I truly loved Elizabeth and Darcy's story. Captain Max Sterling (Darcy) is handsome, strong, and caring. Elizabeth is beautiful, sassy, and stubborn. She is a wonderful Mom. Her son, Thomas, is a formidable child. The supporting characters are also great. I like Elizabeth's Father.  The world building is captivating, and the scenery is well described. The storyline is original, intriguing, romantic, and beautiful. This is an amazing adventure. I love all about this story. Marina Barrett did an outstanding job with the narration. She has a beautiful voice, very pleasant to listen to. The characters were easy to distinguish. I LOVED it, and I HIGHLY recommend it. This is one of my favorite audiobooks.

This was my first Amy Cecil's book. O-M-G-! You have to listen to this masterpiece. The story is more a thriller than a Historical Romance. The storyline is intriguing, mysterious, twisted, and scaring. Now, I can't wait for the next book in the Duet, The Mind of a Killer. Marina Barrett is a new narrator to me. She has a beautiful voice, and she did an outstanding job with the narration. I highly recommend this audiobook.

Melting a Duke's Winter Heart: A Clean & Sweet Regency Historical Romance NovelMelting a Duke's Winter Heart: A Clean & Sweet Regency Historical Romance Novel by Abby Ayles
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

This was my first Abby Ayles's book, and won't be my last! Melting a Duke's Winter Heart, a clean and sweet Regency Historical Romance Novel, is beautifully written. I love all about it: the characters, the storyline, the intrigue, and the ending. Sarah is a lovely character, strong, modern, and caring. Augustus is handsome, caring, and protective. His past is heartbreaking. I love their chemistry. The sisterhood between the twin, Lucille and Sarah, is wonderful. I would love to have Lucille's story. I enjoyed reading this story, and I highly recommend it.

Excerpt:
Redmayne turned to her, looming closer. Larger. “Don’t,” he whispered. “Don’t what?” “Don’t try to make me a good man.” “I wouldn’t dream of it, Your Grace.” When she should have retreated, she didn’t. Instead, she finished her whisky, enjoying the warm languor spreading from her middle to her blood. “Good.” He became very still, watching as she licked the last of the honeyed liquor from her lips. The cool of the night suddenly disappeared, the air turned heavy with salt, and moisture, and . . . something more illicit. Possibly dangerous. “Have you ever really been kissed, Alexandra Lane?” She blinked. And froze. However, the usual paralyzing terror that would have cinched around her bones at such a predicament . . . didn’t. Fear was more of a faint shimmer through veins made sluggish with whisky. It was accompanied by another more curious emotion. Not excitement, but something adjacent to it. Why did he want to know? What did he hope her answer would be? Indeed, what should she say? The truth, of course. A lie would not serve her here, and besides, she’d too many of those on her conscience to bother with a flippant fib in the dark. “N-no.” She wished her voice were stronger. That she’d had a different, more worldly experience to share. But alas, she’d never allowed a man close enough to kiss her. As far as she was concerned, men had long ago ceased wanting to. “I thought not,” he murmured, setting his glass next to hers on the banister. Alexandra forced another swallow. “How—I mean— why thought you not?” And why was she suddenly speaking nonsense? A faint hint of arrogance brushed at his lips. “Men like me can just tell.” Her heart kicked against her lungs, evoking shorter, shallower breaths. “Men like you?” “Hunters.” The vibration of the word spread down her spine and unfurled in the most alarming places. “Your lips, innocent as they are, beg to be kissed whenever I am near. Your tongue moistens them. Your teeth worry at them. And when I stare, as I am doing now, they soften and part, like an invitation . . .” Stunned, Alexandra curled her lips around her teeth as if to hide them from him. Had he really gleaned all that from her mouth? Had her lips truly betrayed her so? He paused, glancing up. “Your eyes are always afraid, though. I think it’s because you can sense I want to kiss you, too.” “Y-you do?” He nodded, his own lips melting into a soft smile at the abject astonishment in her question. “Since the moment we met on the train platform, I’ve dreamt of kissing you in more than a dozen ways.” The sound she emitted was somewhere between a cough and a gasp. Were there more than a dozen ways to kiss? How many more? “We . . . we shouldn’t be speaking of such things, Your Grace.” She turned away from him, suddenly trembling at the edge of an abyss, ready to leap into madness. He drew close, never once touching her. But the heat and strength of him stretched beyond his physical being, threading through the night toward her, endangering her composure. Her resolve. “It’s wrong, I know it,” he murmured, his voice containing an agony that tugged at her racing heart. “I’m to announce my engagement to your friend this very night, and all I can think of is what you’d taste like. I’m more of a monster than any scars or scandals I claim. But I’ve not kissed a woman since before the jaguar. I’ve not particularly wanted to until your lips drove me to distraction.” Unable to hear any more, she whirled around. “Would you marry me?” The idea had sparked like a fever, an idea that could fix everything. An idea that would release them all from the clutches of their sins. All it would cost was her soul.

About Kerrigan
Kerrigan has done many things to pay the bills, from law enforcement to belly dance instructor. Now she’s finally able to have the career she’d decided upon at thirteen when she announced to her very skeptical family that she was going to “grow up to be a romance novelist.” Whether she’s writing about Celtic Druids, Victorian bad boys, or brash Irish FBI Agents, Kerrigan uses her borderline-obsessive passion for history, her extensive Celtic ancestry, and her love of Shakespeare in almost every story.
She lives in a little Victorian coast town on the Olympic Peninsula in Washington State with her wonderful husband. When she’s not writing you can find her sailing, beach combing, kayaking, visiting wineries, breweries, and restaurants with friends, and hiking…okay…wandering aimlessly clenching bear spray in the mountains.

This was my first Byrne Kerrigan's book, and won't be my last. This is the first book in he Devil You Know Series. OMG! I love this dark historical romance! All the characters are great. Alexandra is a beautiful and strong character. Her past is heartbreaking. I love Piers. He is handsome, bossy, alpha, but also loving, caring and protective. They are perfect together, and their chemistry is strong. Alexandra's friends, Cecilia and Francesca, are beautiful. I love their friendship. The storyline is absolutely captivating, filled with mystery, and secrets. This book is also available in audiobook, and I would love to revisit it this way. I highly recommend this story.
